Description
In relation to faith, the geography of the human body is rich in places. Feet that walk or retrace paths, hands that grab or let go, ears that listen or are closed… But there is probably no other place that plays such a peculiar role as the eyes. Before physical contact – and assuming that there are also blind eyes – they are the sentinels charged with catching a glimpse of both desired and undesirable presences while they are still far away. For this reason the eyes can be considered as an authentic door of faith, as happens to the beloved disciple when he discovers the presence of the risen Lord on the shore of Lake Galilee (Jn 21). Porta fidei, the “door of faith”, is precisely the title that Benedict XVI gave to the motu proprio with which he convened this “Year of Faith”. A year that runs from October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013. The start date is not a coincidence, since it marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the twentieth anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. To commemorate this anniversary, three of the most important and significant authors in the field of Spanish religious and theological thought – all three, to a large extent, children of that Council whose memory we celebrate – offer us their reflections on faith. With their eyes fixed on Jesus, each with their own style and particular genius, the three of them go on to explain those aspects related to the Christian faith that can help readers to personalize it and make it increasingly their own. Because that is what it is all about. The different sections for personal or group reflection that accompany the texts also offer different ways of reading the book and the possibility of working with it.
