Description
The starting point is the biblical category "image of God" and the anthropological conception involved in it. The systematic exposition then studies the soul-body problem; the personal, free and social character of the human being, invested with an absolute value and an inviolable dignity; his capacity to creatively model reality through work, technology and culture; his nature as a creature of God. In the development of this broad theme, special attention is paid to the approaches in force today and to the intense interdisciplinary dialogue that they are generating: the mind-brain-machine debate, the crisis of the idea of person, the current denials of freedom, the obligatory passage from the "theology of earthly realities" to the "theologies of the political" (which recover for the notion of "progress" the necessary ethical-social ingredients), the readings of the human in an exclusively biological key, etc. The writing of the book was guided by a fundamental concern: the only thing that, in the end, interests the Christian faith when it faces the enigma of the human condition is to know how man should treat man and why. And believers find the answer in the fact of the incarnation of God: every man ("image of God") must be treated as God himself, because God wanted to be and to be treated as man.
