Description
The schooling of Chilean women in the 19th century, a fundamental work of the French nuns of the Sacred Heart, meant a key milestone in the progress of Education in Chile and in the development of women themselves, who gained access to areas of knowledge that until then had been reserved only for men. Anna du Rousier, a faithful representative of female power, emerged under the protection of post-French Revolutionary freedoms. She brought the unique and prestigious model of the Society of the Sacred Heart to Chile in 1853 and managed to successfully establish teaching methods that had already proven their effectiveness in the rest of the world. This book traces the life of this exceptional nun, whose character and vision transformed the teaching and learning processes of the Chilean female elite through an integrated and rational education. The work also allows us to learn in detail about the students and their families, great protagonists of private life and who, for that reason, had a notable influence on the cultural changes and on the very religiosity of Chile that was heading towards the turn of the century.
