Professional ethics

In professional activity, more than doing many things, what matters above all is doing them well. Although technical competence is the necessary condition for being a good professional, it alone is not sufficient for excellence, not even at a technical level. For when that technical competence lacks the express commitment to good practice, we are faced with a lack of sensitivity towards the ethical dimension of the profession. In any case, to carry out a good professional practice, not only science and knowledge are required, but also lucidity and conscience. It is this perspective that allows us to grasp, in addition to the relevance of what is at stake – the intrinsic good that gives meaning, purpose and aim to the profession, and the specific contribution to the common good – the significance that good professional practice ends up having in the autobiographical process of shaping the person himself.
