The essence of Christianity is not an abstract dogmatic content or a general doctrine, but rather, from the very beginning, a living historical figure: Jesus of Nazareth. In contrast to a “Christology from above,” Hans Küng offers in this concise book, written with “sober passion,” the unique profile of the Nazarene seen “from below,” adopting, so to speak, the perspective of those who were the first disciples of Jesus. This approach to the historical Jesus is based on the solid foundation of the rich biblical exegesis of the last two centuries. Because, according to the theologian Hans Küng, only thanks to a conscientious historical-critical work is it possible to clarify the model of Christian life: Jesus of Nazareth as Messiah, Christós, the anointed and envoy of God who is the foundation of all authentic Christian spirituality.
