Lumen Fidei, the light of faith

Pope Francis' first encyclical is entitled The Light of Faith, an expression with which the tradition of the Church has designated the immense gift of Jesus, who came as light into the world according to the Gospel of John. These considerations, written in the context of the Year of Faith and in continuity with the Magisterium of the Church, are added to the encyclicals of Benedict XVI on charity and hope and gather the contributions of both pontiffs - Francis and Benedict - who, as successors of Peter, are always called to confirm their brothers in the immeasurable treasure of faith with which God illuminates the path of all men. With this first encyclical Pope Francis wishes to recover the character of light proper to faith, which has the capacity to illuminate and transform the whole existence of the human being, and to point us all to Mary, Mother of God, as the perfect image of Faith.
