October 31, 1517: A scroll with 95 theses is posted on the gate of the Wittenberg Castle Church. They are presented for debate by the friar Martin Luther, an Augustinian and doctor of theology. The theses contain his proposal for a return to the authentic Christian faith, underlined by bold statements ranging from his criticism of indulgences and the power of the Pope to the needs of the poor. No one imagined it, not even Luther, but it was the beginning of a revolution. These pages follow step by step the life of a man with a complex and contradictory personality, fully immersed in his time. Restless, impulsive, intelligent, sociable, passionately dedicated to the search for God, Luther marks the transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age in Europe, and continues to challenge us today.
