Mary and Health

In Mary we have an admirable example of compassion and comprehensive health. But, in addition, we find in her the best patron and intercessor. In this sense, it is not surprising that, since the first centuries of the Christian era, believers in Jesus Christ have also invoked her as the health of the sick. «Mary deeply believes in the merciful God and proclaims that “his mercy reaches those who are faithful from generation to generation” (Lk 1:50). Like her, we believers today also believe in and confess the God of mercy who, through his Son Jesus Christ, has given us the salvation we long for and has changed the human condition, converting oppression into freedom, ignorance into knowledge of the truth, sadness into joy, death into life, sin into grace, illness into health. When we contemplate Mary as an example of a merciful and healthy woman, we feel encouraged to take care of our health and that of others in an integral sense: to take care of our body and to take care of our soul, trying to go out to meet the sick (Taken from the Prologue by Jesús Fernández González, Bishop Responsible for Pastoral Care of Health of the CEE).
