Description
The pontificate of Paul VI (1963-1978), successor of John XXIII, is inseparable from the Second Vatican Council both in its development and in its immediate application. Pope Montini took the name and spirit of St. Paul, apostle of the Gentiles, tireless traveller and preacher of the Gospel, inspired and prolific writer, mystic in love with Christ. According to Cardinal Poupard, three words summarise his programme well: awareness, renewal and dialogue of the Church with the world. Before speaking, one must listen to the voice and heart of man; understand him and respect him; and where he deserves it, follow his same path (Ecclesiam Suam 33). In a turbulent time, Paul VI renewed the liturgy and the curia, preached the universal proclamation of the Gospel, worked for Christian unity, dialogue with non-believers, peace and solidarity.
