Words of Christ

«The question we are asking here is a question of principle. Can man hear in his own language a word that speaks to him in another language, that of God, more precisely, of his Word? [...] We will take as a guide for our reflection the very words of Christ, for they contain the answer. Just as every scientific assertion and, at bottom, every human affirmation are bearers of a certain claim to truth, so too the word of Christ is distinguished by an excessive claim in the eyes and ears of many men of our time. Its claim is not only to transmit a divine revelation, but to be itself purely and simply this Revelation, the Word of God himself. Following step by step the connection of these words, we will endeavour to see whether they are capable of legitimising such a claim, namely: of proclaiming the Word of that God whom Christ claims to be».
