Description

Professor Lennox applies logic to show that science and religion are not natural enemies, as some would have us believe, but quite the opposite. With the unassailable reasoning of a mathematician, he tears through the long-standing controversies between science and God, using a remarkably thoughtful intellectual process: debunking myths, tackling miracles, evil and suffering, meticulously analyzing the standard model of physics, the Big Bang theory and the open universe. He examines the papers and conclusions of prominent scientists from Newton to Hawking on religion, the universe, God and Creation; and he studies the role of faith and rational argument in both religion and science. Can one be a scientist and believe in God? Is there a place for faith beyond scientific inquiry, beyond the microscope and telescope? And many other Christian scientists think so. Can science explain everything? No, science and the technologies that flow from it have brought much to the world: clean water; more food; better health care; longer life. And we live in an age of rapid scientific progress that promises to solve many of the problems we face as humanity. But there are things that remain beyond its limits, and that have no other explanation than that provided by faith. We must not forget that science, as fascinating as it may be, is simply the investigation of the world around us. Are science and Christian faith compatible? Yes, they are not only compatible but they complement each other; and properly understood in the purpose that each pursues, they fit together perfectly. Faith begins where science ends, providing existential answers that science cannot give, and that the great philosopher Miguel de Unamuno labeled as “the tragic feeling of life.” Therefore, after raising in the last chapter the debate about the historical Jesus and the veracity of his resurrection, citing the words of Paul in Colossians 1:15-20, he concludes the work by saying: “Christ is the one who gave existence to our world and to ourselves. Not getting to know Him means missing out on the ultimate purpose of life and the joy that comes with doing so. But His message to you is that because of what He has done, you don’t have to miss out on anything at all. An apologetics book that brings a new scientific dimension to the pressing need to “scientifically” reconcile the Christian faith with the academic world.
