From this volume: critical edition, translation and notes by Ángel Custodio Vega, OSA. The 2nd ed. has been updated with a retranslation, new bibliography and indexes, and modernization of its critical Latin apparatus by José Rodríguez Díez, OSA. It is difficult to find, not only in Christian literature, but even in universal literature, a more beautiful and charming, more moving and suggestive book, after the Holy Bible, than the Confessions of Saint Augustine. Because although all those that came from his marvelous pen are admirable, we might almost say divine, among them shines this fascinating and original book of his, which for fifteen centuries has not ceased to be read with supreme delight by the wise and the ignorant, by the credulous and the unbelievers. Approaching the Confessions and being in tune with their message has not been, and even less so now, an exercise in pure erudition, consisting of seeking the future in the past, but rather the obligatory and contagious confirmation of man's radical restlessness in the search for truth, for happiness, for God. For this reason, the Augustinian Confessions have not lost any of their original freshness and spontaneity.
