Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, the sacrament of Reconciliation has been the subject of misunderstandings: some thought that in order to obtain divine forgiveness they had to undergo a long session of genuflections or voluntary flagellation; others reassured themselves - and still do - by thinking that by obtaining the priest's forgiveness, they were free to sin again; others were worried about "damning themselves" for not telling all their faults.
